D.C. PMs Can Post, But Not Enforce, Stricter Smoking Signs

Washington D.C. smokers may soon see signs asking them to move farther away from office buildings when lighting up, thanks to a new law that allows property managers to post signs banning smoking within 25 feet outside their buildings. But some critics of the new law are calling it phony because there is no fine associated with violating a “no smoking” sign, no mechanism for police officers to write tickets for infractions, and no authority for security guards to move smokers along. Supporters have said that, although the law has no real enforcement, it is as far as the legislature can go without banning smoking on sidewalks.
